A great way to see a little slice of rural Queensland and support the big team of knowledgeable volunteers who keep the line running.
Gympie train station has been lovingly restored and the cafeteria has a good range of food and coffee but remember to get your coffee order in 30 minutes prior to departure. The trip takes you south out of Gympie through the rolling hills of rural Queensland. giving good views of rivers and bushland. The train itself is comfortable and the staff provide good insights into how the railway works. The rotation of the engine on the turntable at Armour is a fascinating and efficient operation. If you are in the area, get yourself a ticket and take a trip back in time on the Mary Valley Rattler.

Excellent experience - incredible history supported by enthusiastic and wonderful volunteers
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the Rattler experience. From our arrival at the amazing old Gympie Railway Station and to experience its original features it just set the tone for the next few hours. We started with a lovely coffee and scone at the cafe - both were excellent. We also visited a very well stocked gift shop. When the train pulled up to the station prior to departing on our journey we were able to spend time appreciating the amazing steam engine and the lovingly restored carriages - the carriages had come from all over Queensland to be used for the Rattler. After a few happy pics we were able to talk to a few of the many volunteers who provided so much information about the train and the upcoming journey in a friendly and engaging manner. We then boarded our allocated carriage. The day was magnificent and complemented the lovely scenery along the way- rolling hills, amazing bridges, tunnels and a patchwork of small clusters of old and new homes. After reaching Amamoor the highlight definitely was the engine being turned around on the turntable . Back on board and our return journey was just as enjoyable. I would certainly recommend this experience to family and friends

Fun for young and old. The Staff were so great on board.
Was so much fun. I love that all the locals wave to the train from the back of their houses and even the cars driving along the road were all waving. The staff were great also and we had a nice stop to have a picnic with some live performers and a market stall. My son had a great time waving. Back to everyone.
